Palin the Orator, Palin the Attack Dog

Wow. I watched the Sarah Palin VP acceptance speech today on youtube and was stunned by just how well she delivered on everyone’s expectations. She completely knocked that speech out of the park. Dare I say it? Yes, I think I will:  she is a better speaker than Obama, who I actually find a little monotonous. Palin came out swinging, too. There were some sharp things spoken about Mr. Obama. The most well-placed jab by far was her reply to criticism about her lack of experience:  “I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

My opinion of Palin has now improved. She is an obvious complement to McCain. Palin can attack fiercely, and she can speak clearly and easily. She said the things that have needed to be said for a long time now. Throughout her speech, I found myself saying, “Finally! Someone finally pointed out the obvious” on Obama’s inexperience, plans to raise taxes, and lack of accomplishments in the senate.

Sarah Palin and the Republicans behind the scenes did an excellent job of portraying her as one of us–a mother of a son going to Iraq and of a down syndrome baby, a woman uninterested in the glitze of an upper-income lifestyle, and a tough sportsman.

Though I think more of her now, I am still concerned about her lack of experience. She has served fewer than two years as governor of Alaska, and her previous experience includes sitting on a government panel and serving as a small town mayor. This is such an important issue, given McCain’s age, and it was essential that he provide the American public someone who is ready now to assume the mantle of the presidency. The good news is that the Obama camp really doesn’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to the experience issue. In my mind, electing Obama president is like electing David Blount, one of Mississippi’s state senators. On the other hand, selecting Palin as VP really has gagged McCain on the issue of Obama’s inexperience.

Regardless of your faults, Mrs. Palin, here’s to you. You did a heck of a job last night.
